Product Advice: How to choose the correct containment type.

As an M&E contractor, you’re probably aware of the importance of cable containment and how often it is used. It’s a crucial element of services as it’s used to support cables, make cable management easier, appear more visually pleasing, and for power distribution. But there are a few different types of containment, so you may be a bit unsure as to which ones are more appropriate to your projects, and when to use each type.

Why choose cable basket for installing your cables?

Cable Basket provides a big convenience for electrical contractors. This continues at installation. Onsite workers do not need to calculate on the manufacturer to make every change to accommodate features like bends, corners, or intersections. Instead, workers can cut the mesh into any shape they need using bolt croppers.

Another benefit, particularly over cable tray, is its ease and speed of installation. It can easily be clipped together and doesn’t require fiddly fixings.

Wire mesh cable tray has got more and more common over the past 10 years, particularly in data centres, plant rooms, food environments, air terminals, structures, and so on.

It comes in different finishes for different applications and is almost always used indoors. Our stock range the Pemsa Rapide system is ideal for trapeze-type indoor installations (due to its electro-galvanized finish).

Why choose Cable Tray for installing your cables?

Cable trays are mechanical support systems that can support electrical cables used for power distribution, control, and communication. They are the perfect solution for running large quantities of power or data cables overhead or under-floor.

These are available in 3-metre lengths in either light, medium, or heavy-duty gauges and are usually pre or hot dip galvanised – although other finishes, like powder-coating, magnelis and stainless steel, are sometimes used where specific installation situations may require a more corrosion-resistant material.

A full range of fittings are available such as tees, intersections, risers and bends to speed up the installation time.

Medium duty tray has a wall height of 25mm and heavy duty 50mm. On occasions, we have been asked to provide 75mm or even 100mm deep which are all available upon request.

Why choose Cable Trunking for installing your cables?

Cable trunking is a rectangular/square enclosure made of steel, and usually has a removable or hinged side, that is used to protect cables and provide space for other electrical equipment.

Trunking is commonly used to lay out underground cables and wires, and where current needs to be carried between multiple devices and terminals. It protects cables from dust and water ingress due to its concealed, secure nature. This also allows for a more aesthetically pleasing look.

All trunking comes in 3-metre lengths and IP4X-compliant trunking has become the standard in the MEP industry. Other finishes such as stainless steel can be requested, but it is typically made of pre-galvanised steel

Why choose Cable Ladder for installing your cables?

Suited for electrical, instrumentation and telecommunications cables. Can support heavy cables, cable bundles and pipes at long support spans. Cables can enter and exit anywhere along the span. Ladders provide free airflow, which is essential to avoid overheating of cables.

Although it’s typically used for heavier-duty applications, also comes in standard-duty which has an overall height of 100mm. It also comes in heavy-duty gauges, at 125mm height, as well as extra heavy-duty at a height of 150mm.

Ladder will almost always be hot-dip galvanised, however, pre-galvanised cable ladder for indoor applications is becoming more popular.

Because lengths of cable ladder don’t come with couplers, if you’re fixing a lot of lengths together, you need to order couplers. However, fittings (bends, tees, etc.) always come with integral couplers.
